Dare to be Different – Go Beyond Frontiers
Break your mould! Read that again. Break your mould! Dare to be different, you are created uniquely. Go beyond frontiers. Elaine S. Dalton puts it more clearly: “If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world.”
To bring change to the world, or let us say, your world, you have to be different. The only time you can break your mould is when you dare to be different and then bring out the creative spirit of God inside of you. This is what inspiring leaders do; this is what creative artists, designers, innovators and scientists do. That was what Jesus did. That is what you are called to do. Creative minds go beyond the status quo, they go beyond the edge of conformity and pave way beyond frontiers.
On Being Different:
Being different means not being afraid to challenge existing norms reasonably. It is being willed to bring in something new, give a new interpretation to an old ideology. It is the ability to ask questions, make new researches. It is the ability to follow your won track, not just following a path already-made for you by your family, friends or teachers. It is the ability to seek your true self and becoming your person. It is charting your own course and taking charge of your destiny. It is becoming the person God has created you to be and not being a copy of one guy in TV or one fellow your grandpa said you incarnated from. It is the ability to break your mould, and enjoying the freedom Jesus bring to your life. It is the ability to ignore the snapshot mentality of people and be who really you are. I challenge you to dare be different.
I believe that everyone is born different – unique, just the same way we have our unique fingerprints. However, as we grow up, we begin to discard who we are just to fit into someone else’ mould. To be accepted by our peers and family. To conform to society’s definition of “normal” and “common-sense”. As if every common-sense is a good sense. Have you dared to ask yourself the Why behind the things you do almost by impulse? Dare to be different. That people do it doesn’t mean it is right or that it must be done that way.
“Breaking the rules is not for the meek designer or timid client. It takes guts to go against the industry norms.”
It is fear, which most times is implanted in us by the society that begets the attitude of ‘people are doing it so I should perhaps do it, too.’ That everyone is doing it, does that justify the action? Have you asked if there is a valid reason why everyone does that or is it just because everyone should do it? Ask questions! At times, daring to be different might make you look like an anarchist – but yes, a creative anarchist.
Education can fool you
Most people spend over 15 to 20 years of their lives getting an education so that they can get a job. That’s all! The essence of education is not just to make good grades but to develop yourself. Some people think that once they get the qualifications and gain all those certificates, they have made it in life. Does that not surprise you? They just get certificates and that’s all. They get stuck for the rest of their lives. No personal developments, no innovation, nothing-nothing, just a job. Even after so many years in education, some people do not have their characters changed. They are still the same raw and uncivil humans as they were before they knew education.. Education is meant to develop not just your head, but also your heart and your hands.
For some, studies and personal developments end in school. Most people will not read again until they have an examination in sight. They forget that every day, we either pass or fail the examinations of life. Every day we have the chance to be a better person, to bring the desired change to our society, to be different from the mess prevalent in society. The essence of education is to impact creativity and positive in society. The saddest part of the story is that most people do not realize this. If they had to be graded at the end of their lives you know what they would get? D, E and more F’s. They let society’s “common sense” and “normal” grade them.
The Bold can be Beautiful
Stir hearts and minds with your creative wits. Have the courage to demonstrate that creativity you have. People may dislike it, but after some time, they will come to appreciate your uniqueness.
Remember, the bold can be beautiful. Sometimes the best way to find the star people are looking for is to look beyond the firmament – to think outside the box. Doing this can make you feel lonely and indeed be alone. But never mind, it is in the aloneliness that your unique creative contribution can thrive,
Society revels mediocrity so much that it takes only a little more work to set yourself above the rest. Have you ever wondered what has made some companies like Apple very unique? It’s just a little work beyond what others do. Doing that one thing you have a passion for regularly will put you way above the rest. It will surely set you above the normal and bring out the God-given creative uniqueness in you. Read books that challenge you and that make you think out of the box. Make friends that challenge you to be a better human being. Look for a mentor, attend workshops and seminars. Be updated, be informed, and be active. Stop overeating and oversleeping. Keep social media in control. Do you think Larry Page (CEO of Google) and Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) spend one-third of the time you spend on their apps? No, they are busy being creative.
I Challenge You to Dare!
I dare you to be different. I dare you to shut out on your distractions. I dare you to tap into your creative self. I dare you to work on yourself non-stop for 6months. I dare you to pursue your dream will all you got. I dare you to move. Stand up and move. Make a call if that would help. Pick up a book. Learn, learn and learn. Use google – ask questions there. Write down your plans for the next 40, 50, 70 years and begin to work on it. I dare you to take the risk. At times the bold is beautiful.
