Man in the Mirror: Michael Jackson on Leadership
The most difficult person to govern is yourself. When you cannot govern yourself properly, how are new sue you can lead others?
Having a high standard for self. Expecting more from yourself than others.
Humility. Rejecting unnecessary special titles and entitlements.
Going first before others. Not giving people loads that you yourself cannot carry.
Michael Jackson gives a good concept of Self-leadership in his pieces – Man in the Mirror.
Below is the chorus of that song:
“I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you want to make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change”
The song, “Man in the Mirror,” peaked at #1 on the U.S. charts in January 1988.
The following could be learnt from this piece:
Change begins with you:
The change you seek in others should begin to form yourself. Leaders are those who begin to change their attitudes before they influence others into changing their own. Leadership is about influence and for you to influence the other person, you must be doing that which you want to influence him/her into.
Leaders are not finger pointers. Leadership is not blaming others over things that went wrong. Leadership is admitting your own faults and finding a way to make amends.
Pushing your frustrations to others is not leadership. Rather owning your frustrations is the beginning of leadership.
In the verse, Jackson sings:
“I see the kids in the streets,
With not enough to eat
Who am I to be blind?
Pretending not to see their needs”
Compassion is the pillar of humanity. Compassion is a bigger religion than any other religion. Leadership is about compassion for others. Remove compassion in leadership, it becomes a tyranny. Compassion turns sinners into saints. It turns high standards into high aspirations. Influencing others requires a large heart to admit their weaknesses.
Man in the mirror is about removing the wood from your eyes first before asking your neighbour to remove the speck in his eyes.
